How this:
Has basically the same, if not less cargo room than this:
Quite seriously, I’ve always thought that my Cobalt has a very large trunk for its tiny size, but I could not believe that I actually fit LESS of my stuff into the trunk of the Altima than I did in the Cobalt. I had to stick a few extra things in the back seats, and even then it seemed about the same in terms of overall room. How does this even make sense?

I’m gonna say crash protection structures take up more space. But just a guess.

Possibly because the altima has more rear leg room.

Could partly be due to a cheaper, more compact suspension design in the Cobalt... along with a more squared off roof and trunk design that puts function ahead of form.
Wanna know something interesting? This:
Has more that 35 cu ft of trunk space with the seats up... which is more than either of those cars have combined. And the overall interior volume is around 20-30% bigger too.
Matter of fact, the Focus wagon as slightly more interior volume than a Ford Crown Victoria and a trunk that is more than 1.6 times bigger.
So if you want a vehicle with lots of space, but don’t want an SUV or Van, get a Focus Wagon.

It’s kinda funny, but Buick’s smallest sedan (Verano) has a bigger trunk than the Regal and LaCrosse.
I think compacts tend to emphasize trunk space because they're less likely to be used for backseat passengers, while midsize and larger sedans might be more likely to carry people in the back, so they adjust the seat/cargo capacities accordingly.

some kind of beam rear suspension=more rooms?
